A technical writer is a professional who transfers and communicates information between at least two parties through a medium that best suits the transfer. Google hires these writers to work for them but only the best candidates for this position are shortlisted. After shortlisting is done, an interview is held where candidates are assessed and the best candidate that fits this position is employed. For you to succeed in this interview, intensive preparation before the interview is needed.

Before any interview, it is necessary to do research on the company. Make sure you understand what Google is, where it was first established, the year it was established and who established it. Such information is critical as it may be used to test if you really understand about the company. Google requires you to do a post-interview test which has three parts. The first part is writing instructions on making PB J sandwich, the second part you are required to write Google’s products summary and the final part is doing a test on editing.

Having a technical writing portfolio will double your chances of succeeding in a Google interview. The portfolio needs to be professional demonstrating your previous work. Ensure your documents are printed double-sided as it gives the interviewer the impression you value paper and ink. Your portfolio looks heavy giving the impression you are competent enough for the job. In case the employer asks you to send the portfolio, ensure it is not violating your previous contract because of disclosing unauthorized information. If there is a risk of violating your previous contract, explain you can only show in person.
To be well prepared for this interview ensure you are equipped with the right skills which include fluency in English, ability to learn complex technologies, have strong interpersonal skills and understand coding. During the interview, questions related to these skills are asked to confirm your competence. Remember to be confident such that you do not show cowardice or shyness as it may turn off the employer. A trick to gaining confidence is conducting a mock interview with friends or family. Before a Google interview, review your social media accounts and ensure there are no embarrassing posts. It is common for employers to do a background check on social media accounts.
Carry at least six copies of documents just in case need arises. The documents should include your resume, a list of references, copies of reference letters and your portfolio. Dress formally or the interview because this is a major first impression.
